A road trip through Eagleby
By Jackie Dobson
Eagleby is a great place to visit either for a half day trip or all day. It is only about 20 minutes from Brisbane and the same to the Gold Coast. It is bounded on all four sides. To the west is the M1 and to the north, south and east is the Logan and Albert Rivers. It is a quiet spot where the hurly burly of life can be forgotten for a time.
If you`re a fishman there are many quiet spots. Some locals go to Wharf Road and also the pontoon at Albert River Park. If you have a boat, access to the rivers is available just off the M1.
For bird lovers and there are many who come to Eagleby, we have 281 species of different birds. A great place to view them is Eagleby Wetlands just off Logan Street. Well marked paths lead to the wetlands and the Albert River. At times, you can identify 70 species of birds within a couple of hours. If you need peace and a quiet time of contemplation from the busy world we live in, this is the place to visit. Another great bird watching site is along Eagle Road. Turn left off Fryar Road and about 100 metres along on the left is a large wetland. At times you`ll be able to see pelicans, black swans, egrets and magpie geese to name just a few. While you`re here look up! You are bound to see at least one of our raptors and there are nineteen that have been sighted here including the White- breasted Sea Eagle and the Brahminy Kite. To the right is a sugar cane farm. You might be lucky to be there during harvesting time on this busy farm.
If you have pets bring them along. You can walk them in the wetlands, of course on a leash, and at Albert River Park there are enclosed dog areas. If your child is a skateboarder there is a popular skate park here as well as a playground and seating. Barbecues are also available for use. The Logan Council has recently completed a lot of work here to make it a much friendlier family park. My favourite place to walk my dog is Cec Clark Park just in front of Eagleby Tavern. It is a gentle 20 minute walk and is wheelchair friendly.
After all this activity, get yourself a meal and a drink. I recommend the Eagleby Tavern for a cheap, good quality sit down meal. At the nearby shopping centre there are at least five other local takeaways offering sushi, fish and chips to toasted sandwiches at very reasonable prices and the staff are friendly. The local supermarket, Fresh and Save, has bargains every week and is comparable to the larger supermarkets. If you want something a little more special and in a quieter area there is Kiwanda Café and the very popular Sugar Creek Smokehouse along Distillery Road. Meat lovers will love this destination. These are all local establishments so the money goes directly back to the community. If you stay
the day and into the night, I recommend the Beenleigh Artisan Distillery, along Distillery Road. I recently went for the tour of the Distillery, had a meal at the gourmet food van and a drink at the bar. There was also live entertainment.
Very nice night out and very friendly staff. You will need to check for
available tour times.
Another great place to visit is Brigalow Country Commuity Club. The first Saturday of each month at 6:30p.m. you`ll hear some fabulous home grown country music. They have very reasonably priced meals and the atmosphere and people you`ll meet are well worth a visit.
A great place to stay is McNevin`s Logan Park, a three star motel with a pool. A great way to cool off after a long day.
Come and visit our patch of paradise. You will be pleasantly surprised.
